Bike Golf

Just a few days after scores of golf clubs in the USA said they would experiment with giant holes to see if it would speed up play and bring more customers to courses, another radical new idea has been launched: bicycle golf.

A venue in the USA has purchased two specially-built bicycles that cause minimal damage to fairways. This allows golfers to cycle round the course as if they were using a buggy.

The result is faster rounds but also golfers who feel that they have had an active workout.

Kierland Golf Club in Arizona, USA, which was the first golf resort in the country to offer a fleet of Segways for golfers to use, acquired the bicycles, which feature small-diameter wheels and wide rubber tires to take it easy on the turf. The bikes also have custom-designed golf bags which are able to carry a set of 14 clubs mounted on the back.

“People are looking for a fun way to play golf. This is fabulous, it’s a great way to get a workout,” spokeswoman Nancy Dickens said. “Why sit on a stationary bike at the gym?”

Dickens added that an 18-hole round can be reduced to just two hours for cyclists. The bikes are faster than using a buggy because each individual golfer is on one, and goes directly to his or her ball.

Those keen on participating in bicycle golf at Kierland currently can do so for free. The club says demand has been so strong that it purchasing more bicycles.

Here’s a couple of local news anchors in the USA talking about the concept:
