Overview

Germany is located deep in the heart of Europe, sharing its borders with nine other countries. Its location allows Germany to offer golf in many great golf courses and outstanding locations.

Germany is one of the largest golfing nations in Europe with over 700 golf clubs and over 600.000 golfers. Out of all the golfers roughly 57% are males, 35% female and 8% junior players. Germany has reached high numbers due to the exceptional industry organizations that support golf in Germany who continually strive to improve the golf business.

Golf is one of the fastest growing sports in Germany, however, the small decline of growth rates over the last decade have to be considered. The growth in player participation has steadily increased but the growth rate has slightly decreased throughout the years.

Professional golfers like Bernhard Langer and Martin Kaymer have put Germany on the map of recognized golfing nations. Martin Kaymer has just won his second major tournament of the year, which is a boosting opportunity for the development of golf in Germany.

‘We have a great product in Germany and we are very optimistic for a successful future for the German golf industry. Germany offers a wide range of golf courses, creative management and with our partners, professional support from the golf industry and golf bodies like the EGCOA to support the industry on a European level. We still see lots of potential in all parts of the German golf market.’

Overview Player Participation

Overview

According to World Bank statistics the population of Germany has decreased 2% throughout the last decade. This could be one of the reasons to explain why the participation rate has increased continuously. Nevertheless, we also have to take into consideration the great work Germany has been doing to attract and retain players over the years. According to the EGA statistics the number of golfers in Germany has only increased ever since they started collecting these numbers in 1985. Over the last year the participation rate in Germany grew 0.23%, reaching 0.79% in 2013. When comparing the participation rates of Germany and Europe, we can see that Germany is below the European participation rate Average of 1.76% in 2013. However if this trend continues, meaning that participation rate in Europe will keep decreasing it is most probable that Germany will surpass the average European participation rate in some years.

Overview Player Development

Overview

Ever since Germany started collecting data on the number of players, the numbers have never decreased. The growth of players have been steadily growing throughout the years accommodating Germany as one of the power golfing nations of Europe. In 2013 Germany had a total of 635.097 players. Since 2004, 177.860 new players have started playing golf or got affiliated to the German Federation, which is an increase of 39% in the last decade. What is important to see from this graph is that the growth of players have started to settle down and there is a continuous decreasing growth trend, which means that the growth of players is less and less every year when comparing it with the previous year. This is something that is happening with most European countries and could lead to a negative growth in the coming years. In the last decade the growth rate has taken a deep dive going from 6.81% in 2004 to 1.69% in 2013, a difference of -5.13%. This means that in the last 10 years the growth rate decreased on a yearly average of -0.51%. Therefore, if the growth maintains to decrease at the same pace the Germans could be finding their selves in the negative numbers in a couple of years.
